But not many know that rich history brings with itself tales of fear, of things unusual, of stories that are stranger beyond human imagination. Bhangarh: India's Most Haunted
Famously addressed as ‘The most haunted place in India,’ Bhangarh, in Alwar district needs no introduction. However, a glance through its history may help build up a premise. The fort was built in the seventh century by the son of Maharaja of Amer, Madhav Singh, as his kingdom’s capital. Besides the main palace, the village had over 9000 houses until 1720, when it was destroyed by Sawai Singh in revenge of his differences with the last ruler of the kingdom, Balwant Singh. There are several other stories behind the fall of Bhangarh, all themed on the occult, but no one has been able to tell facts. If you stand atop the main palace, which we did, you’ll end up being impressed by the exquisite town planning within the fort. Legend has it that the whole town comes to life in the middle of the night. Some also say that the lively town came to a ruin because of a curse. Haunted or not, the ruins of a whole town with royal palaces, market area, top-less homes and temples, now abandoned with an air of disclaim are enough to send a chill down your spine. Nobody resides within the walls of the village now, of course, keeping the creepiness quotient a level higher. Several people residing around the area claim to have felt an ominous presence and strange visions after the sunset. Local caretaker will urge you to leave before dusk. The Archealogical Survey of India warns every visitor to not be in the premise between sunset and sunrise, and locals have moved their town outside the limits of the fort.

Kuldhara: The Ghost Town
BhangarhFortmight be the most famous of all, but it is not the only one capable of taking you to the world of the unimaginable. A mere 40 kms from the golden city Jaisalmer, lies the desolate village of Kuldhara, abandoned by its people 200 years ago. According to folklore, the town was once bustling with a huge community of Paliwal Brahmins, who left the village overnight, letting it go to ruins. The village was never inhabited thereafter and is so deserted that people have started claiming it to be cursed, and hence haunted. Walking through the cluster of deserted streets, roof-less houses and broken walls, empty lanes and the few temples is an experience in its own. As per the customary rules of the haunted, no one’s supposed to stay in Kuldhara once the night falls. Apparently, a number of paranormal activities such as strange voices, mysterious shadows, whispers, sharp fluctuations in temperature and mysterious appearance of hand and foot prints have been reported.
